“Bonjour!” | Just Kidding, I Don’t Speak Any French.

So I know about three terms in French:

  • Bonjour
  • Au revoir
  • Merci

That list isn’t really getting me far in Paris, unfortunately. I basically need to download some knowledge rurl quick. My best motivation has always been the threat of public humiliation. I don’t want to make a fool out of myself in line at the grocery store, so therefore I’ll learn how to say “please” in French.

I don’t think that’s a healthy way to handle things, but it’s my way. And it works. And that’s what matters at this point.

I filled my day with random errands and interactions. I needed to find lunch (priority #1). Then I needed to go to the grocery store, then the butcher shop, then the local produce stand, and lastly the pastry shop. I mean, isn’t Paris super cutesy where you have to make a million stops instead of getting everything at Walmart?

While at the local grocery store, I decided to pick up a few extra produce items. As I was picking them out, I noticed people were using a machine where you weigh your produce and receive a barcode sticker.

What is this? Do I need to do it as well? After hovering others for a bit, I realized that I had to scan my own produce before checking out at the front.

No problem, seems straight forward. Until you need to know yellow onion in French. And unfortunately, that’s not one of my three terms.

So I stood there for an eternity trying to decipher everything through Google translate. And after several minutes of intense insecurity (and looming public humiliation), I finally figured it out.

For future reference – yellow onion is oignon jaune.

One last interesting part of the day? Please look at this tiny elevator. Claustrophobic to the max.
