Eating the Notorious Fergburger

Back home in Dallas, I would consider myself a Burger Connoisseur, and I do not take this title (nay, responsibility) lightly. I’m bold enough to say that In-N-Out burgers are mediocre at best, Whataburger is vastly underrated (for fast food standards), and that Hop Doddy has one of the best gourmet burgers in the area (with their shakes being a big bonus).

And don’t even get me started on fry comparisons.

So when I heard about the mega-hyped burger joint Fergburger in Queenstown, I knew I had to try it.

Unfortunately due to travel times, we arrived at Fergburger right at lunch rush hour. We stood in line to order for about 20 minutes, and waited on our food for about 40 minutes. All things considered, the line and wait were actually pretty organized and efficient. But I’m also pretty positive about the experience because we magically snagged a table. By the time our number popped up on the screen, my stomach was ready for the task at hand.

Fergburger

I ordered the “Southern Swine“ – seemed appropriate. It had the normal burger setup, but with bacon and avocado added. I took my first bite, and my mouth sank into the perfected hamburger bun. It was toasted on the outside, but oh so soft and fresh on the inside. Honestly, the bread was a 10/10 for me.

When it came to the actual burger patty, it left much to be desired. It could’ve had a bit more seasoning or pepper kick, but it was relatively juicy. I didn’t care for the sweet undertone of the tomato relish, but it wasn’t a deal breaker.

The onion rings were delicious. Just throwing that out there.

Overall, I found the burger to be quite good, but not exactly global hype-worthy. But isn’t that the case for most popular things?

My recommendation: try Fergburger if you’re in Queenstown, but you’re not missing anything if you can’t fly across the world for a burger.

So Molly and I continued our road trip from Twizel, through Queenstown, and onwards to Te Anau. This is a popular stop simply because it’s the closest town to Milford Sounds (about a 2-hour drive). So after a long 5-hour drive from Twizel, we were ready to call it a day and relax in some sunshine. And that’s exactly what we did.
