The Best View in Edinburgh

Edinburgh

This morning I looked out the window and found an astonishing miracle — the sun. I didn’t even know what to do with myself. In a last minute decision, one of my new hostel roommates and I decided to pack up our stuff and hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat.

Ok, so here’s the deal.

It’s my opinion that this is the #1 thing to do in Edinburgh. However, it must be done on a sunny day.

It’s no secret that Edinburgh’s weather can be pretty miserable even in their “summer.” So if you’re lucky enough to experience a sunny day in Scotland, then you should take full advantage of it.

It’s at an elevation of about 822 feet and is a perfectly moderate hike. I would consider myself a pretty fit person, but I was huffing and puffing at times.

Once we finally made it to the top, the wind became the boss. Standing on that ledge was slightly terrifying. But scarier than that? Standing up on the highest peak of the hill.

One of my favorite aspects to travel has been the people I’ve met. I had known my hostel roommate for all of 10 minutes before we decided to go hiking together. Throughout the hike we talked about our trip plans, our lives back home, but most importantly, feeling understood by one another. Being surrounded by other travelers who have the same desires and issues is such a rare privilege. It’s like finding a special, kindred spirit, but like — all of the time.

Fun fact – we definitely did not walk back to the hostel after. We definitely got an uber.
