With music festivals and flower crowns making a revival within millennials, one could quickly become overwhelmed by the amount of events to choose from. Globally, there are upwards of 50 annual music festivals with genres stretching across mainstream pop, rock, hip hop, and indie. Attending every single one is basically only an option for the socialites. But for the rest of us commoners who have a limited number of vacation days, we must be hyper-selective – choosing to attend only the best of the best.
So do yourself a favor and buy a plane ticket to Budapest. Because Sziget should be on your list.
Sziget is one of the largest music festivals in Europe boasting nearly half a million visitors each year. It’s a weeklong music experience with headliners such as Rihanna, David Guetta, Ellie Goulding and Zedd having graced the main stage in years past. And 2017 only gets better. The headliners announced include The Chainsmokers, Macklemore, Major Lazer, Wiz Khalifa, Flume, and Charli XCX with new additions being added each month.
Located on the Obuda Island in the center of Budapest, Sziget is bursting from every corner with a vibrant, creative energy. From music to art to dance, Sziget celebrates all forms of expression. So if you’re in between music performances, take a walk to the nearby art installations or participate in the many inclusive activities that are available. Or if you’re looking for a place to meet new people and hang out, head to a cool off zone before your next favorite band hits the stage.
As opposed to some music festivals that are hosted in the middle of nowhere (*cough* Burning Man *cough*), Sziget is located in one of the biggest up-and-coming cities in Europe. In your down time, you have the option to balance concerts with river boat cruises and thermal baths. Experiencing Hungary’s culture is a unique opportunity that’s too good to pass up.
The island offers designated areas for those who want to pitch a tent and stay close to the action. But for those who do not find camping to be a thrill, accommodations outside of the island are not far with the help of public transportation. Sziget also offers a Citypass which gives discounts to spa entrances, museums and public transportation during your stay.
So what more needs to be said? Pack up your John Lennon sunglasses and face paint, board that plane, and spend a week at one of the most extravagant and whimsical music festivals in the world.
The 2017 Sziget Music Festival is held August 9th-16th. Check out their website for more information about festival passes, performances, accommodations, FAQs and more.
